SYNOPSIS
Morning Sessions on "Jesus and the Old Testament"
This series of talks explore the challenging topic of Christian hermeneutics, addressing principally how Christians may read the Old Testament in a way that is both faithful to the historical meaning and the larger discourse of God’s plan. It is hoped that this will lead participants to a more nuanced appreciation of how Jesus is indeed the fulfilment of the Old Testament. Different scholarly approaches will also be discussed. Two themes will be explored:

	Scripture and Covenant
The talk focuses on the importance on the covenant, and how we are to understand the meaning of scripture (OT) in the light of an ongoing covenantal story between God and his people. Scripture is not just naked text, but a text connected with a story, which is moving towards a climax and a denouement. Once this is grasped, a lot of how the NT uses the OT makes a lot of sense. Key scholarly debates and contributions in this area will be featured. Texts such as Matt 1:22-23; Mark 4:12; Romans 10:13 and Rev 13:1-10 will be examined. Concepts such as ‘fuller meaning’ (sensus plenior), ‘canonical reading’ and ‘double fulfilment’ will be discussed.

	Jesus and Covenant
If the OT must be read as an open and on-going story, then Christ is the promised climax and denouement. He becomes then the hermeneutical key for interpreting God’s Word and ways. To use technical language: if Scripture contains a sensus plenior (fuller meaning), then Christ is the sensus plenus (full meaning). In this sense, he is truly the hope of the OT, the hope of all God’s people and the one who completes God’s great redemptive plan. The talk will show how this is the assumption of NT writers and examine key texts that testify to Jesus’ role in bringing about the climax of the covenant. Texts such as Mark 14:22-25; Luke 24:13-49 and Phil 2:6-11 will be examined.

Public Evening Sessions on "Hope in Turbulent Times, Expositions from Romans 5 - 8"
This series of 3 talks by Dr Tan Kim Huat explore the topic of Christian hope by studying Romans 5 - 8. Its purpose is to understand what this is exactly, how different it is from the many schemes of hope on offer in our world, and how we may mine it for living in these turbulent days. It is hoped that by being imbued with hope, Christians may share this glorious message with people around them, furthering the fulfilment of Isaiah 9:1, ‘the people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned’ (Isa 9:1).
