40 Years After the Singapore Billy Graham Crusade (1978)
2018 is a very significant year. It was 40 years ago that the Singapore Billy Graham Crusade was held in December 1978 at the former National Stadium.
A local committee was formed consisting of leaders from different denominations and organisations. Bishop Chiu Ban It was appointed as Chairman of the Advisory Council of the Crusade. He and Rev Kao Jih Eng of the Chinese Church Union, Singapore, wrote an official letter of invitation to Dr Billy Graham to come and conduct the Nation-wide Evangelistic Campaign.
Rev Canon James Wong was one of the vice chairmen of the Crusade. Rev John Chew (later bishop) was appointed the chair of the Youth Committee. Among those appointed as Advisors were Archdeacon Lau Teik Oon, Rev Canon F Lomax, Prof Phoon Wai On, Mr John Tan Teng Wai (later bishop), Rev Dr Moses Tay (later bishop) and Rev Yip Tung Shan.
The Straits Times reported that in the final night, 75,000 people packed the National Stadium to hear the American evangelist, Dr Billy Graham. Thousands of counsellors were trained to help those who responded to the altar call. Each night thousands walked forward to pray and to make enquiry. Many were led to the Lord Jesus Christ each night and channeled to the churches. In that year it was a great demonstration of church unity and cooperation.
You are invited to the Service of Reunion, Rekindle and Return Thanks to celebrate the 40th year after the Singapore Billy Graham Crusade in 1978. This special Thanksgiving Service will be held at Wesley Methodist Church, Fort Canning Road on Tuesday, 4th December 2018 at 8 pm. All are welcome.
Please also send me a note of how you were blessed at the Singapore Billy Graham Crusade in 1978 and how you were involved in choir, counselling, follow-up, ushering and/or office work. You may email it to email@example.com. Personally, I was privileged to be appointed as the General Secretary for the Crusade. I was then the pastor of Grace Methodist Church. It was a great experience of blessing for me in preparing for the historic iconic event, working with different churches.
So mark the date "4th December, 8pm" in your calendar and plan to attend this time of rejoicing and jubilation for the historic event in the life of the Church in Singapore!
